The donor transfers a gift to a trust. United Way receives an immediate benefit by receiving annual payments from the trust. At the end of the trust, what remains is returned to the donor or to a non-charitable beneficiary named by the donor, typically children or grandchildren. If established as “grant or trust” the current annual distributions to a charitable organization are considered to be tax-deductible contributions.
