![]() We really like the Ogre Story. It reminds us that when faced with immediate harm, we must act to help those in harm’s way. The story also teaches us that, unless we go “upstream” to the source of a problem, we will continue to face that problem “downstream.” The moral is we must do both.
We cannot forsake those in need. Neither can we ignore from where their need arises. We are all strengthened when we take up the challenge of caring. By committing ourselves to creating lasting changes in the lives of people the benefits ripple throughout the community. We discover the difference we can make in the lives of individuals and in the strength of our communities. A difference that results in lives grounded in home and family, health and work. Lives in which hope can happen.A difference that results in communities that are stronger because of the lasting changes we can achieve when aspirations are accountable. For lives that are teetering on a tightrope, A NET. Next, to create opportunities out of need and crisis, A LADDER.
There come moments when it simply does not matter how these lives became precarious. It only matters that someone is falling. What do we become if we do not secure a net? With others, United Way of Olmsted County works to maintain that net. A net that includes ensuring that every person has access to adequate and nutritious food. In emergencies, short-term housing. In winter, warm coats. There is never a time or season that a child does not require care. United Way of Olmsted County looks for opportunities for you to make the greatest difference. We direct your investment to community partners able to meet basic needs and respond to crisis. We organize countywide efforts to collect and distribute food and clothing - harnessing the generosity of neighbors to reach those who can benefit most.
The main consideration of “charity” should be “change.” Giving that cares to make a difference. While meeting basic needs is a first and necessary step, the next step should be a step up. For some this next step may require a healthier lifestyle. For others, a GED or high school diploma. Others need job skills for employment at better wages. Securing public health insurance. Services that enable a senior or person with disabilities to live at home. Putting more money into the pockets of those that need it most, helping them build assets and achieve financial stability. United Way of Olmsted County looks for opportunities for you to make the greatest difference. We direct your investment to community partners able to create opportunities for stability and independence. We organize countywide efforts to connect working families with the resources they can use to build stable, independent lives. |
